Why Sanjay Dutt’s 1993 multi-star film Kshatriya failed

1993 saw the release of the highly anticipated Bollywood film Kshatriya, directed by JP Dutta. Sunny Deol, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Sunil Dutt, Sanjay Dutt, Divya Bharti, Meenakshi Seshadri, Raveena Tandon, Rakhee Gulzar, and Kabir Bedi were among the intriguing ensemble cast members in the film. The film was doing well in theaters until a controversy around Sanjay Dutt’s name caused the screenings to stop, which ultimately led to the film’s failure at the box office. Kshatriya was touted as an action film with a lot of drama and passion, and it was supported by Sunder Das Sonkiya. The film was well-received by reviewers in addition to being adored by viewers. It was anticipated that the film would become a blockbuster after its successful run in theaters, but sadly, it was unable to make much money.

Kshatriya was reportedly produced on a Rs 5 crore budget. According to reports, it made over Rs 2 crore 80 lakh in its first week of sales after opening to Rs 45 lakh. Three weeks later, the film’s premiere was canceled because Sanjay Dutt’s name came up in the 1993 Bombay bombings case. Despite a strong start, Sanjay Dutt’s arrest resulted in a movie showing restriction, which had an impact on Kshatriya’s box office results.

Kshatriya was finished in precisely a year and had a record-breaking number of artists working together. The release date was set for November 20, 1992. Two days before to the film’s premiere, there were disturbances in the community, which forced a four-week suspension of all film screenings. The film was not able to be shown until March 1993.

The actor from Khal Nayak suffered a sharp drop in box office receipts after his incarceration. The crowd adored the actors’ performances and the screenplay, so the star-studded film had every chance of becoming a huge smash at the box office. The last film featuring Sunny Deol and Sanjay Dutt together was Kshatriya. The pair had previously worked in Yodha and Krodh.
