ENG vs. IND: Despite Dhruv Jurel’s valiant 90, England leads India 46–1

On the third day of the fourth Test of the five-match series at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi, wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel struck a valiant century before England bowled out India for 307, to lead by 46. Lunch was called at 1pm on Sunday.

In the morning session, Shoaib Bashir claimed one wicket to record his maiden five-wicket haul in a Test match.

India trailed by 134 runs at the start of the third day of play, but the hosts rallied thanks to a vital 76-run partnership between Kuldeep Yadav (28 off 131 balls) and Jurel. In only his second Test match, Jurel escaped a caught-out opportunity at 59 to top score for India in their innings, even though Kuldeep went on to become James Anderson’s 698th Test wicket.

He made an impression with his economical batting and wise shot selection at the crease. He also shown maturity, application, and a cool head under pressure to keep the team out of trouble in trying circumstances. Despite missing out on a first-ever Test century by ten runs, Jurel’s six-four-and-six-ed innings helped India reach 300 and cut the deficit to 46.

Jurel and Kuldeep were alert at the start of the session as England took the second new ball. After Jurel struck out straight out against Ollie Robinson, Kuldeep drove Bashir square off the wicket for another boundary. However, Kuldeep inside-edged to his front foot in an attempt to block Anderson, and the ball drifted over and struck the stumps.

With a single through mid-on off Tom Hartley, Jurel stormed ahead to claim his first-ever Test fifty, and he then went on the attack. With relative ease, he swept Hartley for four, and he made it out on fifty-nine when Bashir mishandled a catch off Anderson at mid-wicket.

After being dropped by Ollie Robinson for 59, Jurel hit Bashir for consecutive fours and sixes and quickly reached 90 off 149 balls. However, left-arm spinner Hartley cleaned him up with a faster delivery to deny him a well-earned century.

Jurel attacked, lifting the ball and muscled Bashir for two sixes and a four. Akash Deep also took him for a six over mid-wicket, but Bashir had the final laugh, trapping the batsman leg before wicket after fending off a stumping appeal.

Bashir’s first five-wicket haul in first-class cricket was achieved. The left-arm spinner then got one to slant in and spin past the outside edge to strike the stumps, before Jurel drew and slammed Hartley for six and four, respectively.
